May Our Hearts Be Blameless Towards Him

 “For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him. You have done foolishly in this, for from now on you will have wars.”” ‭‭2Chronicles‬ ‭16‬:‭9‬ ‭ESV‬‬

For context, this verse was delivered to Asa by Hanani, a seer at the time. Asa ruled over the tribe of Judah. Initially, he was a virtuous king, faithful to the Lord. He dismantled the idols and Asherim, commanded Judah to seek the Lord, and even removed his mother’s idols. He sought the Lord, and the Lord granted him victories over his adversaries. The Scriptures even state that there were no wars until the 35th year of his reign. However, Asa’s heart hardened towards the Lord, he ceased seeking His guidance, and he was confronted by Hanani, leading to our verse for today. (See 2Chronicles chapters 14-16)


“For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth…”


In Isaiah 43:4, God declares, “…you are precious in my eyes, honored, and I love you.” In Psalm 32:8, God promises, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” Knowing that He is protecting us, watching over us, guiding us, and that He sees us, that nothing is hidden from His sight, brings immense comfort. However, there may be situations where we would rather hope He doesn’t know or see.


Nevertheless, Hebrews‬ ‭4‬:‭13‬(ESV‬‬) reminds us, “And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”

Again, in Job 34:21, it states, ““For his eyes are on the ways of a man, and he sees all his steps.”

‭‭

In our verse, God is searching for those whose hearts remain blameless toward Him, so that He can provide them with unwavering support.


In 1Samuel 2:30, the Lord declares, “…for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed.”


So, what does it mean to have a heart blameless toward the Lord?

Is my heart blameless towards Him? Is yours?


A definition I came across defines blamelessness as “sincere, wholehearted devotion to God and a lifestyle of integrity, rather than absolute sinless perfection”. Underscoring the importance of commitment to the Lord and His ways, full devotion, and living our lives to honor Him and bring Him glory.


Without this definition, I would honestly struggle to see myself as blameless. Reflecting on Colossians 1:22(ESV) and Ephesians 2:1-4(ESV) reminds me that I was once rebellious towards God, living my life my way. I was “dead” in my trespasses and sins, concerned only with my needs and desires. But God, out of His immense love and mercy, drew me to Himself. Through His grace, He saved me from a life of futility. As Psalm 40:2 says, “He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.”


Because of the work of Jesus on the cross, I have been set free and forgiven.


Therefore, I claim 1Kings‬ ‭8‬:‭61‬(ESV‬‬) as my own: “Let your heart therefore be wholly true to the Lord our God, walking in his statutes and keeping his commandments, as at this day.”


Reminding myself that no matter what happens, whatever might transpire, God is still taking are of me. He is still guiding me; protecting me. He is still my keeper (see Psalm 121). His mercies are new each morning!


Lastly, as Abram was instructed in Genesis 17:1 to walk before the Lord and be blameless, let us also encourage one another to walk in the path of the Lord and be blameless in His sight.
