Only Jesus Truly Satisfies

“The whole claim of the Redemption of Jesus is that He can satisfy the last aching abyss of the human soul, not only hereafter, but here and now”. Oswald Chambers

Oswald asserts that Jesus has the power to fulfill the deepest and most profound desires of the human soul. What is it that you yearn for the most? What need or desire consumes your thoughts and emotions?

Psalm‬ ‭42‬:‭1‬-‭2‬(ESV‬‬) says, “As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?”

Have you ever thirsted for God as the Psalmist says? Do you yearn for a deeper connection with God? Or is it more convenient to seek fulfillment in other ways that often fall short of satisfying your true desires?

‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭31‬:‭25‬(NIV‬‬) says, “I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint.”

It is the Lord who can truly satisfy, replenish, and provide rest! He will do this, but we must also take action. We must come to Him, be open to receiving what He offers. As Jesus says in Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

In Jeremiah 2:13, the Lord describes how we have created for ourselves empty vessels that cannot hold water, instead of seeking Him. What are the “vessels” you have created for yourself? What do you depend on to fulfill your needs? Just as the woman at the well needed to discover the gift of God, so we need to recognize the abundance He has for us, and turn to Him to satisfy and fulfill our deepest desires.

Jesus tells us in ‭‭John‬ ‭6‬:‭27‬(ESV), “Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you…”

What is it that you work for? We may work to earn a living, provide for our families, and save for our future. There’s a song that says, “everyone’s working for the weekend,” but do all these things we work for truly last? Do they truly satisfy? I suppose they do for a while, but everything eventually fades away, things break down, people move away, relationships change or end, nothing it seems last forever. But what about working for food that endures to eternal life?

In Deuteronomy 8:3, it says... "Man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord". And again, in John 6:35, Jesus assures us that He is the bread of life.

For me, what truly endures and satisfies is Jesus Himself. His word nourishes us, provides strength for our daily lives. It imparts all the knowledge we need to live this life and prepares us for the eternal life we will share with Him.

However, work, like any job, requires our daily presence. We must dedicate time to the Lord, engaging in prayer and meditation on His word, so that we can receive “our daily bread.”

Therefore, I wholeheartedly believe in Oswald’s statement: Jesus “can satisfy the last aching abyss of the human soul, not only hereafter, but here and now”.
