His Banner Over You Is Love

“…When the enemy comes in like a flood, The Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him.” Isaiah 59:19 NKJV

When the enemy surrounds me, whispering lies, taunting me. When I am filled with fear; can’t breathe; can’t move. The enemy whispers the same lies over and over; “unwanted”, “not needed”, “unnecessary”, “not good enough”, “failure”. His attacks are relentless. When the  battle within me rages on, and I just want to make it stop. When I am tired, and weary of fighting.

For me, this is what it looks like when the “enemy comes in like a flood”. I feel overwhelmed, stressed, and under attack. Perhaps you have felt the same. But what an encouragement to know that when this happens “The Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him!”

I wasn’t sure what was meant by “lift up a standard”, so I found that in ancient times of warfare, an army’s “standard” would have been a visible flag or banner.

Song of Solomon 2:4(NKJV) says, “…his banner over me was love”

In times when the “enemy comes in like a flood”, God’s Spirit lifts us up; protects us; provides the strength we need.

Peter reminds us in 2Peter 1:4, that God has given us great and precious promises. We can claim those promises to help strengthen us and help us overcome in times when we feel under attack.

Psalm 27:2-3 says, “When the wicked advance against me to devour me, it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall. Though an  army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident.”

Why can I be confident, even in the midst of a storm? Because The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”(Psalm‬ ‭27‬:‭1‬ ‭ESV‬‬).

And when I feel defeated; when I am tempted to fall victim to the negativity around me that says, “That’s too much for you”,  or, “You can’t do that”, I need to remember the words of Jesus in Luke 10:19, “…I have given you authority…over all the power of the enemy”.

It is His power within us that helps us to overcome, to not fall victim to negative emotions, to turn to Him to find the strength and encouragement we need to persevere; to stand up against the enemy.

We do not fight our battles alone.

Deuteronomy‬ ‭20‬:‭4‬(ESV‬‬) says, “for the Lord your God is he who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to give you the victory.’”

Next time you feel like you’re under attack, remember, His Spirit will lift you up! His banner over you is love!
