A Firm Foundation
“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who labor in vain build it; unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.” (Psalm 127:1, NKJV)
Perhaps we are like those new homes or were once in a similar state. Thankfully, we have the Master Builder, Jesus, who can come in and clear the land, removing the “weeds” that have taken root in our lives. We need Jesus to repair the cracks in our foundation and restore us to life.
This verse emphasizes that our own strength is insufficient to build our faith. It states, “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who labor in vain build it.” Are we building our faith on Jesus or something else?
In Matthew 7:24-27, Jesus illustrates the consequences of building our lives on sand versus the rock. He emphasizes that He is the foundation upon which we should build our faith. Without Him, we will be vulnerable to the storms of life and will simply fall apart.
Once we have established our foundation, we must continue to grow in our faith. We should remain in Jesus, as He assures us in John 15:5, “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”
Peter further guides us in 2Peter 1:5-7, urging us to supplement our faith with virtues, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, godliness, brotherly affection, and love.
By continuing to abide in Him and strengthening ourselves with His Word, we can achieve what the Psalmist describes in Psalm 1:3. He likens us to a tree planted by streams of water, yielding its fruit in its season and its leaves remaining unshriveled. In all that He does, He prospers.
So let us make sure we are building our house on the firm foundation who is Jesus 🙂
Amen
