The food that truly satisfies
There are two passages from John Chapter 6 I would like to reflect upon today.
The first from John 6:27 (ESV), which says, “Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.””
What is it that you work for?
We work to earn a living, to provide for our family. We work to hopefully save for our future, and there's a song, I think, that says, "everybody's working for the weekend":)
But all these “things" we work for, do they truly last? Do they truly satisfy? I suppose for awhile, but everything fades away, things break down, nothing, it seems lasts forever.
But what about working for food that endures to eternal life?
In John 6:68 Peter says, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life".
In Deuteronomy 8:3, it says... "Man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord".
And again in John 6:35, Jesus remains us that He is the bread of life.
So for me, what truly lasts, what truly satisfies, is Jesus Himself. His word is what "feeds" us. Gives us strength for our days. His word teaches us all we need to live this life and prepares us for the life we will live forever with Him.
But work? Well, like any "job", we must show up every day. Spend time with the Lord, in prayer and meditation on His word, so that we can receive "our daily bread".
The second passage from John 6:54 (NLT) was a little difficult for me, Jesus says, “But anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise that person at the last day.”
I tend to take things literally, but that's not what Jesus was getting at, I think He was speaking on a spiritual level . Tony Evans helped me with this one. "Believing in Jesus is essential, there is no life apart from Him. We live because of Jesus. To "feed on Him" is to receive Him, trust Him, believe in Him, have faith in Him, partake of Him”.
Spending time with Him, praying, reading/meditating on His word, receiving communion, all are ways we "feed" on the Lord.
May we all partake of the “food” that truly satisfies:)
