Treasure Gods Word In Your Heart
“My son, keep my words and treasure up my commandments with you; keep my commandments and live; keep my teaching as the apple of your eye; bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.”Proverbs 7:1-3 ESV
I find this proverb helpful in understanding what God expects of me and the significance of cherishing His Word, following His commands, and experiencing life.
First and foremost, we are to keep His Words and treasure His commands within us. How do we achieve this? What are we truly cherishing in our hearts?
Jesus emphasizes this in John 15:7 (ESV), stating, “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” By allowing His words to abide in us and writing them on the “tablet of our heart,” we gain a deeper understanding of Him, grow closer to Him, and draw the strength we need each day.
Currently, I am committed to memorizing Scripture. I have found that His words offer comfort, hope, and peace, while also challenging me. Perhaps this aligns with Paul’s notion of allowing the words of Christ to dwell richly within us, as expressed in Colossians 3:16.
In this verse, God also instructs us to keep His law as the apple of our eye. What does this truly mean?
I find a helpful definition from Wikipedia: “The phrase ‘apple of my eye’ in English today refers to something or someone that one cherishes above all others.”
To truly cherish His law and commands above all else, we must delight ourselves in the Lord.
Psalm 1:2 highlights the blessings of one who delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on it day and night. This individual is likened to a tree planted by streams of water, yielding its fruit in its season and its leaves remaining vibrant. In all that they do, they prosper. How I hope my life would imitate this tree, strong and secure in my faith!
Meditating on His Word day and night, I believe, helps us remain steadfast during trials and stand firm on His truths in challenging times, knowing that God will reward our faithfulness.
Jeremiah 15:16 (ESV) affirms, “Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name, O Lord, God of hosts.”
Let God’s word be the nourishment and sustenance that sustains us through life’s ups and downs, especially during challenging times. It is a source of joy and delight for our hearts. When we feel discouraged, let His word encourage us. When we feel stressed, let His word calm us. Ultimately, let God be the one who strengthens us and fills us when we feel weak.
May we say along with the Psalmist,
“I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.”
Psalm 119:11, 15-16 ESV
