God can open our eyes

“Then Elisha prayed and said, “O Lord, please open his eyes that he may see.” So the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” 2 Kings‬ ‭6‬:‭17‬ ‭ESV‬‬

  • Elisha’s servant Gehazi, was afraid because of an army that was coming against them, but Elisha saw the bigger picture, he prayed that the Lord would open Gehazi’s eyes and help him to see.  Have you ever felt this way? Problems keep piling up, your circumstances just go from bad to worse, every little thing seems to bother you, you feel like you’re under attack! All you can focus on is the problem at hand and you just don’t know what to do, you can’t “see” a way out. 
  • In times like this, we too can pause, take a deep breath and pray that God would open our eyes, help us to see what He sees and trust in Him to make a way when there seems to be no way. We can pray, like Jehoshaphat in 2 Chronicles 20:12, “…We do not know what to do but our eyes are on you “.
  • Like Jehoshaphat we too can take our eyes off our problems and focus on God. 
  • But what promises in the Bible can we claim to help us do this?
  • Isaiah 41:13, “For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, “Fear not, I am the one who helps you.”” God promises to help us; to lead and guide us.
  • Psalms 75:3, “When the earth and all its people quake, it is I who hold its pillars firm.” Reminds us that when we feel “shaken” or afraid, God is still in control, He alone holds things together, He alone can bring calm in the midst of chaos.
  • Isaiah 43:2 “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.” God is always with us. He will never leave us or forsake us. 
  • So my prayer for all of us today, in the words of Paul, “having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,” Ephesians‬ ‭1‬:‭18‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Lovable and Capable

  ““When men strive together and hit a pregnant woman, so that her children come out, but there is no harm, the one who hit her shall surely be fined, as the woman’s husband shall impose on him, and he shall pay as the judges determine. But if there is harm, then you shall pay life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.” Exodus 21:22-25 ESV ‭‭ I had this verse recently in a devotional. But the devotional was about identity, so I was confused about how this verse could apply to how I see myself?  I really had to think about it for awhile. I believe the Spirit helped me to see that perhaps this verse is about valuing life. Not only someone else’s but my own.  I believe how we see ourselves can reflect how we treat others.  If we see ourselves as loved and cherished by God it will be easier to see others in the same light.  I am reminded of this verse from Matthew 6:26,    “...

Seek His Presence Continually

  What do you need most right now? Peace, confidence, courage, assurance, strength, or perhaps more of God’s presence and glory? As the Bible says in 1 Peter 2:2 (NIV), “Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation.” What are you craving? We all crave something, whether it’s sweet or salty snacks, acceptance and approval, or simply to feel satisfied, comforted, and loved. But do we crave the Lord as much as we do other things? In Psalm 63:1, David expresses his deep longing for God, saying, “O God, you are My God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry land where there is no water.” And in Psalm 42:1-2, he yearns for God’s presence, saying, “As a deer longs for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God.
